Oh No They Didn’t!

About 3 months ago I noticed a big For Sale sign go up in the yard of the building shown above (before it was painted pink). It was once a residential property but was rezoned for commercial. It sits on a relatively busy intersection with lots of shopping across the street (grocery stores, UPS, fast food, etc.).
As a real estate guy I spent some time thinking about what I would do with this property if I were to buy it. What kind of business would I create and how would it stand out? It looked nearly identical to the residential property sitting next to it and down the street. Simply putting a sign in the front yard wasn’t good enough to draw attention. People pass this “house” going 45 miles per hour and there are a lot more interesting stuff to look at on the other side of the street.
About 2 weeks ago one of those “We go to court for you” traffic ticket companies bought it and the For Sale sign came down shortly after. Not long after it was painted as you see in the picture above they also painted a huge mural of a police officer on the wall.
- Does it stand out? - yes
- Do people hate the color? - yes
- Does it annoy the neighbors? - probably
- Do people remember it? - Absolutely!
I started to describe the building to a friend the other day. All I mentioned was the location of this horrible colored house and guess what? They knew what property I was talking about before I even mentioned the color!
Lesson: Don’t be afraid to annoy some people or attract criticism. Many times, it is the company or “guru” that annoys people that attracts the most business.

OMG! John! That’s….that’s tacky even by Vegas standards! I can think of some television commercials that do the same thing. Like that “Head On” commercial. It stands out, the colors are awful, it’s annoying - but I remember it!

Well . . . it doesn’t get much tackier than that! I agree.
I also hate those Head On commercials but like you, I do remember it and have even tried it once when I was at the store and had a headache. If it wasn’t for that commercial I would have never bought it.
I understand how being odd or outrageous can be a good thing but for myself, I just can’t do it to that extent, you feel me?
I don’t think a website could be designed in such an outrageous way and get away with it. Human behavior online is TOTALLY different than human behavior in the outside world.

Did the Head On stuff really work? I’ve always wondered about that.
I hear ya on being outrageous. It’s one thing to be different and stand out from the crowd, but it’s another standing out and being obnoxious as hell.
I’ve seen a lot of blog designs that have tried to be so “different” they’ve gone beyond the bounds of good taste. You’ve got a point about OL and RL behavior being different. There’s a whole other set of rules going on. This might sound like a stupid question, but as a marketer, what are some of those differences that you see?

No. Not really. Maybe a little if anything, but that’s probably because the tingling feeling it made simply made me not concentrate on my headache as much. It feels the same as rubbing Ben-Gay on your skin.
As far as online/offline human behaviors go, it just so happens I wrote an article about how people read websites and then I use what we have learned to examine my blog . . . why I put this there and that over there.
It’s not a blog article so that’s probably why you haven’t seen it. It’s in the Relax Cafe’s Entrepreneur’s Lounge. It’s not a blog article because, well, you never know what you might find if you dig through my website.
Anyway, here’s the link to the article:
